Over the years, we’ve been asked to supply links to the videos we use in our training and presentations. We stream each of these videos from YouTube to illustrate a specific point or concept, as outlined below. We encourage you to utilize the power of video as we have, and would love to know if you have any video recommendations for us (send them to [email protected])
- Gordon Gekko’s ‘Greed is Good’ speech from the movie Wallstreet. This clip actually illustrates the opposite of the point we try to make which is ‘Greed isn’t good’ any more and organizations need to focus on their people as much as they focus on their bottom line.
- Wieden & Kennedy, an ad agency, was trying to figure out how to afford a Super Bowl commercial when a Gen Y employee suggested to create an ad for YouTube and use the keywords ‘Super Bowl ad’ – it went viral. Use this Old Spice commercial and the story behind it to illustrate what the younger generation brings in innovation and creativity. As a side note, here’s how one company used that same commercial concept to promote it’s employee survey: Old Spice commercial parody
- Not all employees ‘shine’ from the very beginning but may find their way with some nurturing. We use this ‘life = risk’ video to show that not everyone is successful on the first try but hard work and perseverance leads to positive results.
- What if 50 years ago someone who had great vision and imagination was told she was crazy? Do we stifle innovation because the idea is beyond our grasp? Check out this little girl’s ‘Essay about the Future’ and ask yourself (and your team), ‘Do we innovate enough; what could we do if we looked beyond our limits?’
- This Culture Pub video provides some powerful lessons and discussions about alignment, communication, and working toward the same goals.
- Want to demonstrate what the true look of disengagement is? Watch this video from Ally Bank that will show that ‘fairness’ trumps most other engagement issues. This provides a great discussion for how important fairness is to employees.
- The cucumber vs. grape video is a great example of how even monkeys know when they are being treated unfairly. Employees know the difference as well.
- A fun way to kick off a discussion around interviewing and hiring is this Pepsi Max commercial.
- The monkey business illusion video provides an example of how when we focus too much on one thing we don’t see many of the other details that pass through our field of vision. This is a great video to kick off a team building to discuss ‘what are we not seeing?’.
- To demonstrate innovation and gamification, use this video! It’s amazing what happens when you make something mundane fun!
- Conducting a performance review can be stressful and uncomfortable. This video is a great kickoff to any discussion or training in the art of performance evaluations.
- This video showing the differences between the generations is a great lead-in to a discussion about both technology and what the generations see differently. It is sure to create some moans and groans.
- Balfour Beatty created this ‘scary’ performance appraisal video to encourage its people managers to complete their performance appraisals on time with great success. Download the video here.
