What We Can Learn about Employee Engagement from the Boston Bruins

By EEngagement

Even though I am Boston born and raised haven’t been a lifetime, Bruins fan.  I grew up on the Celtics and Red Sox.  That all changed in 2011 when they won the Stanley Cup Championship.  It is embarrassing to admit that but it’s the truth.  I have been a diehard fan since then.  Why? It’s so easy to explain and relate back to work. OK don’t work with NHL players, but stick with me on this one.

Bruins Players Have a “Team” Perspective: The Bruins display this frequently and in many different ways.  Let’s take the most recent one.  After their most recent win (June 3rd) against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Jaromir Jagr (a former Penguin) said the following after setting up 2 teammates (Marchand & Bergeron) for 2 Bruins goals:

“I stopped counting a long time ago, I’d rather not score and be still playing, than be scoring and be home already on vacation. It’s a team game”.

‘Nuf said.

Bruins Have Purpose: Whether it is the recent support from the Boston, marathon bombing, or their long-standing work with the Boston Bruins Foundation (provides grants to organizations that meet the standards of its mission, concentrating on the following four areas where it is best able to enrich the community), Bruins give back.  They also support “Cuts for a Cause” where all proceeds help various charities to support pediatric cancer care. Of course, the players participate in getting their heads shaved.  In 2013, they raised $76,000 for this one charity event.

Achievement: Even when performing, they focus on taking it to the next level: It isn’t enough that they have 2 won Eastern Conference final games against the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Bruins will always push for more wins, and stronger team dynamics until they win the Stanley Cup…again.

Bruins Players are Down to Earth: After winning the 2011 Stanley Cup, several of the players were spotted celebrating around our great city.  Zdeno Chara was seen with the cup in the North End, showing it off for fans to see,  Milan Lucic, Nathan Horton, and others were showing it off for a couple of hours outside Tia’s (restaurant/bar) at the waterfront. These are “regular” guys-we see them walking to practice-they have an authentic, down-to-earth attitude.  We, as fans feel more connected to them than some other athletes.

Employee engagement can be defined in many ways aspects of employee engagement absolutely encompass teamwork, purpose, achievement, and authentic people who others can relate to and enjoy being around.

Would you want to work for a company where the culture promoted only individual wins, a laissez-faire attitude about performance, and pompous jerks?  Heck no.  At The Employee Engagement Group, I experience all of these meaningful components with my teammates.  Thanks TEEG and Let’s Go Bruins!
