According to the Wall Street Journal, companies that offer unlimited vacation policies are increasing. Netflix embraced this policy in 2004 with success. Instead of concentrating on how long the employee will be away, the focus is on how the work will get done. Netflix makes it clear that the employee will need to remain plugged in, but they will not dictate the vacation duration.
Another example is The Newman Group before they were acquired by Korn/Ferry. Former CEO, Ed Newman explained, “My philosophy was that everyone working for me was an adult and worked hard. So if you need time off for something, just take it. My experience was that people worked way more than 40 hours a week and if they took a Friday off, they had already earned it and deserved it. I felt like the accrual method was nickeling and diming.”
