Social Media Isn’t the Problem, It’s Your Culture

According to the most recent data, Twitter now has 200 million users, posting to as many as 110  million tweets per day.  Social media is a focus of many people’s lives and within a decade, it will be a major part for businesses and organizations.

Leaders should take notice and build a strategic plan around social media.  Zappos’ CEO, Tony Hsieh has more than 1.7 million followers on Twitter and his tweets fall under four categories: inspire, connect, educate, and entertain.  Hiseh also encourages his employees to leverage Twitter and other social media tools.  The importance of social media is now a part of Zappos’ culture.  While the social media policy at Zappos didn’t “make” the culture, it’s undoubtedly a contributing factor to it-one that treats people like adults they are, writes Schiller.
