New York Times: When Fear Stiffles Initiative

Goldfarb refers to it as, “Trickle-down anxiety.  Accustomed to hearing about budget cuts and layoffs from on high, employees at every level are becoming risk-adverse.” While companies and leaders encourage innovation, employees are reluctant to speak up, suggest new ideas, and even take vacation, fearing it will cause unwanted attention, and that it could put them on the “chopping block”.

Employees understand their organizations and leaders need to make difficult decisions, and often ones that may directly impact them negatively but they still desire and feel they deserve inspirational leaders that will bring out the best in them.
