HBR Review, June 2012, Boris Groysberg & Michael Slind, page 76
“Traditional corporate communication must give way to a process that is more dynamic and more sophisticated. Most important, that process must be conversational.”
Groysberg & Slind found that through globalization, the emergence of social media and technology limit our face-face interactions with coworkers. By simply talking to your employees, can promote operational efficiency, employee engagement, strategic alignment and operational flexibillity. They have identified 4 elements of organizational conversation that will help a conversation become more interpersonal:
Intimacy: Less corporate, more of a “bottoms up” approach, asking & answering questions
Interactivity: Traditional, one way media gives way to social media
Inclusion: Employees are encouraged to share their ideas, often with branding, and storytelling
Intentionality: After debating and deciding on strategy, this creates relevant action
