Sadly, most of us, whether we are football fans or not know the sad story of KC Chiefs player, Jovan Belcher. After killing his girlfriend and himself, the KC Chiefs were left stunned, saddened and still processing the events.
What I found remarkable about this tragedy was the KC quarterback, Brady Quinn’s comments:
“I know when it happened, I was sitting and, in my head, thinking what I could have done differently,” Quinn said. “When you ask someone how they are doing, do you really mean it? When you answer someone back (with) how you are doing, are you really telling the truth?
“We live in a society of social networks, with Twitter pages and Facebook, and that’s fine, but we have contact with our work associates, our family, our friends, and it seems like half the time, we are more preoccupied with our phone and other things going on instead of the actual relationships that we have right in front of us.”
He is right-we ask, how are you? but it’s almost a greeting-not a genuine question. Do we look up from our devices to stay connected to people-or are we losing that human interaction?
I often connect sports to employee engagement and leadership. Here is an example of a player that is authentic, reflective, team oriented and unafraid to speak the truth during the darkest team days.
