It’s has been a couple of busy weeks for Boston sports news. Our mighty Bruins lost to the Chicago Blackhaws for the Stanley Cup. Doc Rivers, head coach for the Celtics has been traded to the Brooklyn Nets, and veterans Garnett & Pierce are headed to the LA Clippers. The most shocking new however is Patriots linebacker, Aaron Hernandez. He charged with 5 counts of gun possession and first degree murder.
Maybe the drugs haven’t work off from my root canal but I spot engagement overload.
Engagement isn’t about Money. The Celtics paid Doc $7 million a year and that didn’t make him want to stay. He wants to win with a team that has more immediate possibilities than the Celtics have. Celtics are in rebuilding mode. Doc wants to win. Achievement is his primary motivator. If it was just the money he would have stayed. When he signed a 5 year contract, he should have known, we will have to rebuild this team. He probably did, but the money and rebuilding wasn’t what truly motivated him.
Behaviors and Traits over Skill or Education. When the Patriots signed on Aaron Hernandez, they went with skill. If they chose behaviors and traits, they would have considered his less than stealer behaviors in his past and how he was inconsistent with the Patriots values. Everyone is asking, “Who will Brady throw to?”. Gronk is beyond injury prone, and intoxicated somersaults have led to back surgery, Hernandez will most likely be in a cell if he is found guilty. Welker? He will be catching throws from Manning. We are placing our bets on Amendola who is injury prone and new to the Patriots. Clearly the Pats organization knows what they are doing but fans are scratching their heads. Oh Myra, how we miss you!
Bruins Accountability and Teamwork: With their painful Stanly cup chances behind them, they remain united as a team. They use team language and even though trades are being made, they continue to support the leadership of the Bruins, and their team mates. They are not using injuries an excuse. Quite the opposite. Bergeron played Game 6 of the final with a broken rib, damaged cartilage and a separated shoulder. “Big-time courageous effort.,” Bruins Coach, Julien said. Chara, Horton, Jagr and a host of other Bruins were also hurt. They didn’t make excuses and never lost sight of their goal.
It is never a struggle to find examples of sports, and employee engagement. What other sports examples teach us about employee engagement, disengagement? Leave a comment-we would love to hear from you!
