Fair or not-the first few seconds count when you meet someone for the first time.  Research shows that the first 30 seconds of an interview determines whether the person gets hired or not.  Below are 10 tips to increase engagement when meeting someone for the first time.

  • Have Open Body Language
  • Leave Bulky Bags Outside the Room (you want to draw attention to yourself, not your bags)
  • Smile
  • Make Eye Contact with Everyone in the Room
  • Engage the Person to Begin Talking Within the First 30 Seconds
  • Let Them Know You are Happy to Be There
  • Ask an Unexpected Question
  • Be Genuine & Authentic
  • Don’t Fidget
  • Be Prepared, Not Scripted
